Many of Charlie Plummers broadcasts from 20 years at WOCH Radio are included in a CD set |
If you like local history, you'll want to rush out and purchase a CD set that none other than North Vernon's
own "voice from the past" - Charlie Plummer - has compiled with another historic figure of local radio - Jess Spurgin.
The set of 10 compact discs will transport you to some of the most historic local events which took place
here and were broadcast live via the county's own radio station, WOCH-AM, from 1961 to 1981.
"There are a lot of very good memories," says Plummer. This was indeed "the golden
age" of radio here in Jennings, as the community embraced the new medium thanks in large part to Plummer, a dynamic young
man hired by owner Dorrel Ochs in 1958 as a part-time announcer and later as its manager.
The CDs' 20-year span includes the broadcast of the Eisenhower funeral train as it passed through the county
on April 1, 1969; the historic visit of then-President Richard M. Nixon to Jennings on June 24, 1971; and the inaugural address
of the county's favorite son, Ed Whitcomb, as he was sworn in as governor of Indiana on Jan. 13, 1969.
There is literally something for everyone on the CDs. You will hear exciting play-by-play action of three
Jennings County High School basketball games featuring Plummer, Dick Lauf and Tom Anderson as well as interviews with
coaches Don Schroeder and Gene Morrison. You will hear many voices from the past, including North Vernon Mayors Gerald
"Jay" Eder, Howard Hendricks and Bill Gregory as well as well known Baptist church pastor Dr. Dillard, postmaster Clyde
Matthews and the late editor of the Plain Dealer & Sun Dick Mayer.
A reenactment of the station's longest running program, "Down on the Farm" with Elisha Layman and Mark Osman,
is included as is an interview with Charles Hurley and Janet Wissel about Nixon's visit.
Teenage heart throbs The Pastels are naturally included as they played on many WOCH remote broadcasts and
appeared each week at the old Skate-Bowl for a teen dance. Plummer was the manager of the band and recalls their sound with
enthusiasm. If you were a teen in the 1960s, you'll remember these four teens, most of whom were
from Ripley County.
Lorena Seal, who was hired by Plummer right out of high school, donned her former WOCH sales persona to
sell sponsorships for this ambitious project. Everywhere she went, Lorena says she heard recollections about the station and
especially Plummer, who managed the local station from 1961 to 1981.
The project came together with a chance remark to local resident Donnie Miller, who was visiting his cousin
who is married to Jess Spurgin down in Arizona. Spurgin, a former WOCH employee and now successful broadcaster in Phoenix,
mentioned he would like to get ahold of Plummer which Miller facilitated. The two discussed "the
good ole days," and Plummer happened to mention to Spurgin he had some old tapes from WOCH. He sent them to Spurgin,
who "went bonkers over the tapes," telling Plummer, "You've got history here!" Thus, the project
was born. Plummer wants everyone to know that the project came to fruition thanks to Spurgin, who
narrates the project and produced it as well.
While he has yet to listen to all the tapes, the former WOCH manager has listened to the narration of the
Eisenhower funeral train as it passed through North Vernon and says it changed his mind about a career he left behind when
he relocated to Florida in the 1980s. Plummer says he never considered himself a top notch color
man, but after listening to the Eisenhower broadcast, he thought to himself "I didn't know I was that good! That section is,
in my opinion, the best broadcast I did."
The CD set will be available for sale at the Hayden Historical Museum and Our Heritage museum in Vernon
starting Sept. 1. The museums will keep $12 of the CD's cost of $27.95. If you want a copy, don't
delay as a limited number are available.

Eric Schneider returns for shoulder surgery

Eric with his "blue roll" |
Eric Schneider '64 underwent additional surgery on Thursday, May 14,
at a hospital in Berne, Switzerland. Two tendons on his right shoulder were torn and fixed again; one of the biceps was twisted; the other one near his collar bone had to be stitched together and some

His wife, Gerti, at the hospital following the operation, said he was extremely
tired, "Now I just heard from him that the night was a horror... lots of
pain, lying on his back and getting accustomed to his new partner - the blue roll!" She said the pain is now under control. She said the hospital has given him a wireless LAN so he can check his
e-mail and answer with his left hand.
Schneider previously had knee surgery in December of 2008. (See story

just a handful of committed volunteers. A couple of the founding Board members were familiar with Pam’s experience in
public relations, a talent sorely needed by the fledgling organization. They called upon her to join them in launching an
ambitious undertaking –establishing one of the first hospices in the country. Pam volunteered on for the job –a
volunteer position that is now thirty years old.

Bill and Pam Stephens at the volunteer banquet |
Pam was honored for 30 years of volunteer service to Hospice of Dayton during a recent volunteer banquet.
“In the early days we were a working Board,” Pam says. “Everything was ‘hands on.’ I worked
on publicity and started the Speaker’s Bureau. We relied on donations for everything."
Being involved in the early development and watching the evolution over several decades on the Board,
Pam has enjoyed seeing many of those early dreams come true. She would still be serving but for a change in by-laws that delivered
the unanticipated result of term limits for Board members. “I miss being on the Board.” Pam says, but her involvement
with Hospice of Dayton continues as she serves with the Hospice of Dayton Foundation Financial Advisory Committee. “It’s
a wonderful cause and a great organization,” Pam says.
Pam is a 1964 CCM graduate and was Dayton's first "weather girl."

'58 grad Ted Bushelman retires
After 41 years, Ted Bushelman is retiring as senior director of communications for the Cincinnati/Northern
Kentucky International Airport. The airport is having a retirement party on Friday night for Bushelman, 72, but his
official last day is Dec. 31. A parachutist landing on a new runway at the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International
Airport in 2005 was just one of many creative ideas by spokesman Ted Bushelman.
He started the job in 1967. Ted is a 1958 graduate of CCM.
|
(Shannon Kettler/KyPost.com) |
"I think that's pretty good since I only needed 27 to retire; but the airport is my second family, and I've
enjoyed all those extra years working here," said Bushelman.
The good years included bringing murals to the airport in ’73. During The Depression, Ted's
late father mixed the mortar for the murals when they first hung in Union Terminal. "So I'm kind of proud what my dad
did will be here long after I'm gone," said Bushelman.
The tough times on the job were the fatal air plane crashes including TWA in 1967. "We went over to
look at it and I tripped and I looked down on what I tripped on and here was a little doll baby sticking up out of the ground.
I broke down and to this day it still gets to me," said Bushelman.
As the airport faces tough times with the downsizing of Delta Air Lines and Comair, Bushelman remains optimistic
the industry will bounce back.
On a lighter note, the one constant that remains is his trademark mustache. "When I was back in high
school I saw Don Ameche and one other person in there wearing one and everybody talked about it and I thought I need a trademark
so I'll just copy it from them," said Bushelman. "It has been constant and I kept it that way."
The Florence City Council member and future vice mayor has no plans to settle down as he belongs to more
than a dozen organizations including the All Volunteer Cable1 of Northern Kentucky which broadcasts sports games for Thomas
More.

David Silvan says it's true
|
David Silvan at the 2006 reunion |
David A. Silvan of Bogart, Georgia graduated from CCM in 1961
and says " I was the first person to be inducted into the "WHITE CASTLE" Hall of Fame (in 2001), that's right folks
the White Castle Hall of Fame. No one else at CCM can say that..."
It was 2001 when White Castle initiated the Hall of Fame:
I grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio, went through college there and left at
the age of 21, some 42 years ago. As a young man, I visited the White Castle near my home at least twice a week, never realizing
that I had developed the Crave for those burgers.
Now that I don't live anywhere near a White Castle, I have driven from
my home in Georgia to Nashville, Tennessee - a 5-hour drive - at least once a month just to have lunch at White Castle. I've
looked over my old calendars and during the past 10 years, I have made 290 trips just for a White Castle!

Pacemaker goes in... Herb goes to lunch
|
Herb Shaw at the 2006 reunion |
Herb Shaw ('64) says although there were a few glitches, everything turned
out for the better. He's speakiing of his new Pacemaker. Herb
says since he was diagnosed with sleep apnea his surgery was done only
with lydacane... no premed or anything! He said you feel a lot and
it really disrupted the operating room, "They never have a patient yelling
and screaming and cracking jokes during the operation." He said
since he had no drugs and was not put to sleep he was in recovery
only a short time. He said he was causing so much distraction cracking
jokes with the nurses, they let him go home about an hour after surgery...
with plenty of time to stop by his favorite Mexican restaurant for lunch.
"Well, I guess I know now more like it was to be operated on in a
battlefield hospital during the Civil War."
Herb says his only complication was catching a nasty cold a couple days
after going home... which he unselfishly shared with his wife, Ruth.
As for as the sleep apnea, he now sleeps upright in a Lazy Boy. No more machine and mask which didn't help his claustrophobic tendencies!

Lynn McIntosh presented 2nd "Eva" Award
Lynn McIntosh, CCM class of 1963, was named the second winner of the
Eva Parnell Superior Achievement Award. The first winner in 2006, Tom Urich (62), presented the award to Lynn at the
50s, 60s and 70s Group Reunion in Indianapolis on Saturday evening, June 14.

Tom Urich and Lynn McIntosh (click to enlarge) |
In accepting the award, Lynn said he could come up with other persons who could have been chosen, but was
grateful for the honor. He said he has never looked back on the road he has taken in life, until now. And he wonders
what might have happened had he taken a different turn.
He admitted that he was a "challenge" for Eva and it's a very special honor to receive the award
named for her. He related that listening had more to do with his success than anything.
Lynn's first professional experience was at WLW, where he met his wife, Carol. He told about the many
persons who influenced his life.. and certainly he has influenced more people than he realizes.
He still works with Westwood One, but knows retirement is in his future.

College’s E-media chair sees tough fit
By Janelle Ceffand
Living under the same roof as College Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati has become a difficult fit, says Manfred K, Wolfram, head of the Electronic Media
Division.
"Any conception that this division has its focus on serving the performing arts at CCM ... is certainly no longer valid,”
he says. I think the idea to restructure CCM into three schools is a very opportune and necessary one. A different momentum
is at work here.”
Its own identity
Wolfram believes that E Media must create its own identity as a separate school. It could then form joint programs
with more suitable colleges on the UC campus, such as the McMicken College of Arts and Sciences, which offers journalism and
communications or the College of Design, Architecture, Art and Planning (DAAP), which has a Web sign program, he says.
Ideally,
E Media should leave CCM altogether, he believes.
Historically
speaking, E Media owes its existence to the College of Music," he
says. "But over the years, the profession is no longer radio and TV. It’s electronic print media, it’s moving
to the web, its cable, its digital and cell phone. It has changed dramatically."
Started with radio
Founded in 1936, Electric Media is one of CCM’s oldest divisions, established at the College
of Music to complement Cincinnati’s strong radio presence. Today,
it’s 209 undergraduate students learn to write, film and produce their own TV shows, movies and documentaries, using
state of the art computerized news systems and digital editing machines. They
learn to become anchors in a mock TV newsroom.
The department would not physically leave, because "we are wired into this building that we helped to finance with
sponsors and donors." And it would continue any existing co-productions with
CCM.
This is a wonderful, high-quality college with a history of success. But its core mission is different,” he says. “If you know of CCM, you will not know who we are.
My constituents
are not in the performing arts they are in the business of media."
E Media’s mission is
to prepare students for the media world. of writing, producing, satellite distribution, and the cable and telephone industry.
A wall of plaques tucked away in a dark hallway at CCM boasts scores of EMMY
winners and some national Emmys.
Famous Grads
Its graduates include Earl Hamner Jr., creator of "The Waltons," writer-producer Dan Guntzelman, who wrote for “WKRP
in Cincinnati" while a student intern at WKRC-AM
(550), and Tom Bruehl, senior vice president at Paramount Pictures.
This program could be one of the truly flagship programs for the university in the 21st century," Wolfram says. "We
have all the ingredients here."
His position is supported by the industry leaders who serve as his advisory board - CEOs and senior vice presidents
of nearly every major corporation in the region - whose portraits adorn the E-media conference room. They have written their
concerns to UC president Nancy Zimpher.
Wolfram does not want to wait for a new dean to make a decision.
“We are already behind,
you set the wheels in motion, and you recruit the type of dean who will facilitate that.”
