A dream was born and came true

Some six years ago (2000) we dreamed up the idea of having a reunion for students who graduated from the College-Conservatory of Music in the 1950s and 60s... before and after its merger with the University of Cincinnati.  Charlie Plummer and Pete Bissman put the first reunion together and fun was had by all.  It was held at the Westin Hotel in downtown Cincinnati.  The second reunion was held three years later (2003) at Downtown Disney near Orlando, Florida.  Serving on this committee were Charlie Plummer, Pete Bissman, Jerry Zack and Terry Jackson.  Once again, the three-day event was a great success.

This year’s reunion (June 23 & 24, 2006) was held at the Garfield Suites Hotel in downtown Cincinnati.  Once again our old faithful Pete Bissman headed up the committee along with Maryann Cannon Luedtke, Pam Swartzel Stephens and Charlie Plummer.  The two-day event included a Friday evening of hospitality in a very nice suite overlooking downtown Cincinnati.  The fellowship of the evening was terrific.  Many then went off into little groups to hit some of their favorite restaurants in the area.

Saturday morning we began with a buffet breakfast at the hotel.  Then we journeyed across the Ohio River for a luncheon cruise on the Belle of Cincinnati.  The afternoon was highlighted with a special serenade on the calliope by our very own Herb Shaw, who said he had always wanted to play a calliope.  After the two-hour cruise it was a rush back across the river for preparation for another special hour of hospitality before our main banquet Saturday evening.  Each radio and television graduate was given time to speak to tell his or her life story.  These stories were totally enjoyed by all present.

Alumni sharing their careers

Special plans had been made for this reunion’s main banquet in that we were going to present for the first time the EVA PARNELL SUPERIOR ACHIEVEMENT AWARD.  The committee had chosen in advance the recipient, Tom Urich, a 1962 graduate with a dual major of radio and television (BFA) and a music degree.

Charlie Plummer served as Master of Ceremonies and made the special presentation to Tom.  It was a very unique crystal plaque.  After the presentation, Tom spoke of his dedication to his career and how much Eva Parnell had influenced his life and career.

One of the more popular things of the night was the invocation delivered by the emcee, Charlie Plummer.  And since there have been many requests for copies we are including it as well.

Our Heavenly Father, tonight we want to thank you for giving us the opportunity to have this assembly of friends from our days spent at the College-Conservatory.  Thank you for giving us the opportunity to attend the College-Conservatory Radio and Television Department.  We all have to admit that it was a very unique educational institution, and that alone is why yet to this day we are still gathering to enjoy those wonderful days that we had together.

Tonight, God, we ask your special blessing on those who wanted to be with us but coud not because of illness.  God, place your hands on them and help them if it be your will.  (And, God, if you have not noticed for most of us our warranties have all almost run out, so please stock your warehouse with as many spare parts as possible.)

God, tonight we hare honoring one of our friends from those wonderful days at CCM.  God bless him and his family.  Again, thank you, God, for bringing us together tonight, radio and television students from the College-Conservatory of Cincinnati.  And we even welcome a few music major guests as well, understanding fully, God, that it takes more of your effort to bless them, but we ask you to show your kindness and consideration toward them as well.  And, God, please make it possible for Herbie to find a way to take calliope lessons before our next riverboat cruise.

In the name of Our Heavenly Father, God bless and Amen.
